Tiny Greens, Big Impact

Our Mission

The mission of Mamas Bears is to empower youth and families in San Diego to reconnect with nature by making gardening fun and accessible.

Mamas Bears helps gardeners of all ages build a sustainable food system through education, conservation and outreach programs. We believe in access to the nutritional, therapeutic and financial benefits of growing food, regardless of income, geographic location or experience.
Our Vision

Our vision is to create a future where children, families and entire communities can grow together through caring for nature, benefiting from their work, and making a shared impact.

By cultivating a shift in perspective that makes growing food at home possible, playful and pocketbook-friendly, we can have an impact on the health and wellness of the next generation.

Health is wealth and sustainable is attainable!
Our Values

Our values are education, health, access and impact.

EDUCATION

Education is at the core of our work. We believe that providing children and their parents with the tools and information to make gardening easy, fun, and affordable is a game changer. Showing families that it’s more than possible to grow their own food, regardless of whether they live in a rural or urban setting, offers endless opportunities for increased nutrition, affordability, and sustainability.

HEALTH

Let’s be honest, kids aren’t always a fan of broccoli and carrots, but when they have the opportunity to be part of the process, from planting to picking, things change! We seek to supplement families’ refrigerator shelves with delicious, nutritious home-grown food by providing approachable ways to garden, placing children at the center of the fun. Instilling a love for and connection to nature early on is key to the next generation of healthy adults!

ACCESS

Access to healthy, nutritious foods remains an issue in too many areas of San Diego. Whether a family is located in a food desert, is struggling to meet the rising grocery costs, or is simply unhappy with the poor-quality produce available in their area, times are tough. We work to make gardening available to all!

IMPACT

The impact of a community growing their own food is big! The direct impact on each family means they’re eating more nutritious fruits and vegetables, spending less on groceries each month, and spending more time together connecting with nature. The long-term impact on children who experience a love for gardening and an appreciation for where their food comes from is a more sustainable future.
